As a part of the 25th Anniversary of the day the Time Capsule was buried at The Little Church on the Hill, we are inviting all 4th and 5th grade students in the West County Area to submit an essay for the chance at a history prize pack.
There will be one prize pack for each grade level. Each Prize pack contains many prizes related to local history, including a local history book donated by the Albion Area Public Library, a large children’s t-shirt from the Albion Carousel, two family passes to the Erie Art Museum and a family membership to the Erie County Historical Society.
To enter, please submit an essay that is 1-2 pages long on the topic for your grade.
4th Grade Essay Topic: What local locations should be preserved so that they are still standing in the year 2055? How will you help make sure this happens?
5th Grade Essay Topic: Why it is important to preserve local historic buildings for future generations? What can YOU do to help preserve local history?
Essays must answer both questions for the appropriate grade level and will be judged on:
- Grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Relevance to the topic presented
- Connections made to specific local historic places
Essays must be typed in a 12-point, easy-to-read font with 1-inch margins, or printed in legible printing. Handwritten essays that are deemed illegible by the judges will be disqualified.
Essays must include a separate title page with the student’s name, grade level as of the beginning of the 2019 school year, and school name. A parent or legal guardian must also submit a signed note permitting the student to submit the essay, giving the Elk Creek Township Historical Society permission to use the essay during the Time Capsule Event, and permission to keep the essay at The Little Church on the Hill in a memory binder that will be created for the event.
Essays and letters may also be mailed to Elk Creek Township Historical Society, c/o 2019 Essay Contest, 10410 High Street, Albion, PA 16401 – OR – submitted electronically as a PDF via email to echistoricalsociety@gmail.com. (The parent note may be scanned or photographed to add as an attachment if submitting electronically.)
Essays must be received by August 23, 2019 in order to be eligible for the contest. Winners will be announced during the Time Capsule Anniversary Event on September 6, 2019.
