Presque Isle State Park Celebrates History the Week of January 19th

Presque Isle State Park is celebrating their history with a week worth of programs that kicks off January 19 with Presque Isle Lighthouse from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, 301 Peninsula Drive. Attendees will listen to stories about the Lighthouse construction, discover the history of its keepers and learn how the lighthouse was coined the “loneliest place on earth.”

Life of a Sailor will be offered January 20 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ridge Center. A park educator will deliver a first-person interpretive program wearing a sailor’s uniform. The program will focus on life aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara during the War of 1812.

Children ages 3-5 along with an accompanying adult will discover the Life of a Lighthouse Keeper’s Kid January 21 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Ridge Center. Fee is $3 per child payable in advance or at the door with exact change or a check made out to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Registration is required. Construction of Perry’s Fleet will be the topic of the January 22 program from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ridge Center. The presentation will explore the important role of the peninsula in the building of Perry’s fleet, along with the engineering, logistics and conflicts the builders faced during construction.

The week will end with Presque Isle’s Historical Structures on January 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. From the fog signal foundation to the remains of the fire tower, many structures are still visible that tell a unique story about Presque Isle’s history. Attendees will meet at the Beach 10 parking lot and should be prepared for a short walk and to travel by car to other park locations.
