Ron Sturga to speak at Edinboro Area Historical Society’s Annual Dinner

The Edinboro Area Historical Society’s Annual Dinner will be held on Wednesday, January 24th at Nick’s Place, Rt. 99 north of Edinboro. The speaker for the dinner will be Edinboro resident Ron Sturga who will present “Reflections of the Past:  Pen and Ink Drawings With Poetry.”

After receiving a degree in Art Education from Edinboro State College in 1963, Ron served as an art instructor and football coach at Port Allegheny High School for seven years.  While there, he received a degree in Guidance and Counseling from St. Bonaventure University.

In 1970, Ron, his wife, Mary Kay, and their son Todd returned to Edinboro where their daughter Erin was born.  Here, Ron served on the faculty at Edinboro University for thirty-one years, until he retired in 2001 as Director of Student Support.

Ron has completed 35 pen and ink drawings accompanied with verses of his poetry.  After the dinner hour, he will talk about some of his pictures and the inspiration for his poetry.

When asked about his work, Ron stated that he was fortunate to have had the opportunity through the years to express his thoughts and feelings through pen and ink drawings with poetry. He said, “I began writing poetry as early as 1970, but in earnest between 1988 & 1994, as I felt the urge to record these ideas and observations lest I forget in time.  I often completed pen and ink drawings at the same time as I wrote the corresponding poems, yet others not until years later.  Capturing that moment in time as I transferred my perception of a particular subject through pen and ink to paper brought me a great deal of satisfaction.  In pairing my poetic interpretation with my drawing, I hoped to enhance the viewers’ experiences even more by rekindling their own fond memories.”

The Edinboro Area Historical Society’s Annual Dinner will begin with appetizers and the meeting of friends and neighbors at 6:00 pm followed by the dinner at 7:00.  The cost of the dinner will be $21 for members and $22 for non-members.  For reservations and additional information, contact Program Chairman, Dr. Ihor Bemko at 814-734-4937.  Selections for dinner include chicken, roast beef, fish and vegetarian.  Reservations must be received by Friday, January 19th.
