Exactly one hundred years ago in June 1914 deadly political activity triggered World War I, the “War to end all wars!”
Eventually, Americans and, more specifically, Edinboro residents joined the war effort in response to the sinking of the passenger ship the RMS Lusitania. The sinking, which was caused by a German U-boat, sparked a sea of protest in the United States as 128 Americans were among the dead, and influenced the decision by the U.S. to declare war in 1917.
The Edinboro Area Historical Society’s newest exhibit features photographs and personal effects which belonged to area soldiers like John Austin and Jesse Tarbell, war souvenirs, home front memorabilia and wartime posters. The exhibit is housed in the Doucette House Museum at 126 Water Street and is open Tuesdays and Saturdays 9 am to noon.
